SKATEBOARDING FOR EVERYBODY

More than simply a bi-annual print magazine, Quell is a full on media company that includes a podcast and event production. One element that people outside of media might not fully realize is that it takes a lot of strength and a thick skin to put your voice out there. Many people at her young age don’t possess that level of maturity. But Adrian Koenigsberg ain’t no basic bitch.
After watching Credits, I had to stop what I was doing to go slappy some curbs. The film is compiled with epic skate spots, creative tricks, hard slams, and getting busted by cops; this film gives an energetic and a “can-do” attitude. The style is visually enhanced with a nostalgic grittiness by recording with vintage camera equipment. As a filmmaker myself, I had to know more! Overall, the fun-loving, positive, energetic theme of the film definitely unleashed my inner hellraiser to go out and fucking get some.
Jake Phelps gave me that name and didn’t give me a chance to change it. We started the band on my birthday; they came down to see my play one of my last shows in LA with this other band I was playing with called “The Deadutantes.” It was psychobilly weirdness. The show was at the Knitting Factory. Jake and Tony were down there so we went out afterwards. We went to some hotel and thrashed this room and started talking about starting a band. We ended up calling it “Bad Shit.”
I think the film has a way bigger message than the average skate film, one that everyone can learn something from. I think it’s incredibly inspiring and shows people that no matter what it is that you love to do, you can always “quit your day job” and make your passion your profession.
We only exchanged a few words but I remembered her well because she stood out; so small, pretty and kind- and SO gnarly. If I wasn’t watching her tear the skatepark to shreds, it was easy to picture her playing third chair clarinet in high school band. Instead of skating the course the “traditional” way at Slam, at one point I remember her ollieing off the deck of one of the ramps, like 8 feet to flat. I had never seen an American Girl Doll skate like that!
So we get on the plane and that was when I discovered alcohol is free on International flights. Because Dave Carnie ordered BEER after BEER after BEER for 14 hours straight.
